Staker leads SOU past Red Hawks

REDDING, Calif. - Southern Oregon’s men’s basketball team came to Redding for their annual game against the Red Hawks on Tuesday, Dec. 15 in the Heritage Student Life Center. The Red Hawks were crippled by the superior inside presence of 6’8” Ryan Staker who scored 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the SOU Raiders past the Red Hawks 82-64.
The first half was marked by physical play, as the Raiders attempted to utilize their height advantage in the post. Simpson big men Dwight Bond and Andrew Schritter were able to contain the damage defensively only allowing allow five interior points from the opposing posts. Justin Sparks took over for the Red Hawks scoring 14 first half points, guiding them into the half down only eight.
The Raiders started out the second half with a 9-0 run that stemmed mostly from low post scoring. Staker scored 21 of his 25 points after the break. Simpson was able to keep the game close but was never able to stop Southern Oregon defensively in order to mount a full come back.
Simpson was able to get solid performances out of their big three as Sparks(19 points), Jason Stubbs (17 points), and Schritter (14 points) combined to score 50 of Simpson’s 64 overall points. Simpson was out rebounded 46-26.
The Raiders, paced by Staker, also got a solid performance from Justonn Smith who scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Southern Oregon shot 50 percent from the field and 44 percent from beyond the arc improving SOU to 8-3 on the season.
Simpson (2-11) moves on after the loss and now looks to Linfield College on Sunday, Dec. 20 in the Heritage Student Life Center. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.
