Lady Red Hawks Softball open season 2-0

REDDING, Calif. - The Lady Red Hawks opened the 2009 softball season with two wins over Corban College on Friday Feb. 6 at Big League Dreams Park. Simpson defeated Corban 6-4 in the first game of their doubleheader. Junior Candice Valerga hit a two-run home run in the first inning. In the fifth inning, freshman Paige Gomez scored off freshman Nicki Feuerbach’s single tying the game at 4-4. Feuerbach also scored in the fifth, which put the Lady Red Hawks up 5-4.  Freshman Stefanie Singh scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to put Simpson up 6-4. Freshman Amanda Crocker was the winning pitcher; she recorded seven strikeouts.

In game two, the Lady Red Hawks were down 6-1 in the fourth inning. Things started picking up for Simpson in the bottom of the sixth inning when they scored four runs to pull them within one run (6-5) of the Lady Warriors, including a one-run home run by freshman Corinne Alexander. Freshman Ashley Rovito hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to win the game 9-6.
