Simpson defeated Southern Oregon in doubleheader

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University’s softball team defeated Southern Oregon University in both games of a doubleheader on Friday March 13 at the Simpson University softball field. The Red Hawks won the first game 1-0 and the second game 8-7.

Candice Valerga scored the only run in the bottom of the fifth inning of the first game on a Southern Oregon error.

Both Simpson and Southern Oregon battled for a victory in the second game of the doubleheader which lasted 10 innings. Southern Oregon got off to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning, but Simpson rallied back in the second and third innings to take the lead 5-3. Southern Oregon regained their lead in the fourth inning when they scored four runs. Simpson was able to tie the game at 7-7 in the bottom of the fifth inning. The game remained tied until the bottom of the 10th inning when Simpson scored the winning run.

Valerga scored Simpson’s first run in the second game off a Leah Metz single to left field. Valerie Rodriguez reached home on a Sylvia Parker double to center field. In the bottom of the third inning, Valerga’s double to center field drove in two runs. Noele Spangler scored off a Corrine Alexander single to left field. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Danielle Crisosto reached home when Candace Valerga hit another double to center field. Valerga had three doubles in this game. Valerga scored on a Southern Oregon error. Metz scored Simpson’s winning run off a Paige Gomez single to center field.
