REDDING, Calif. – Simpson University head volleyball coach Christy Swagerty-Vilas announced the signing of Nicole Cheek of Puyallup, Wash. The 5’-10” middle blocker has signed a letter of intent to play for the Red Hawks during the 2010–2011 academic year.

Cheek will join the Red Hawks from Emerald Ridge High School where she played four years varsity and led her team in the South Puget Sound League (Div. 4A-Large Schools) as a starting middle blocker. She earned honorable mention all-league honors and tied her school record for most blocks in a match.

Cheek recorded 240 kills, over 82 blocks, 92.5 percent service clip, and set a school record of six blocks in a single match in the state championship playoffs.

Coach Swagerty-Vilas said Cheek brings necessary height and athleticism to the frontline and will be depended on for defending the net and earning points for her team.

“Nikki is a powerful, dynamic player who constantly desires to be better,” said Swagerty-Vilas. “She puts up a solid block and has the ability to attack the high and quick sets effectively. She has a strong commitment to winning and success and will be quick to shine on our team this coming season.”

Cheek has trained extensively with various coaches and club programs throughout the Seattle area.

Cheek said she is excited to join the Simpson University Red Hawks.

“I chose Simpson University because I wanted to be in a Christian environment and I wanted to work with Coach Swagerty-Vilas. I had an opportunity to meet all the girls on the team and I’m really excited to join the Red Hawks.”

Cheek has strong ties to the Redding area through family and friends and plans to enroll in Simpson University’s new Army ROTC program.
