Red Hawks sweep Mills
Simpson University Sports News
REDDING, Calif. - Simpson women’s volleyball defeated visiting Mills College 3-0 on Friday, Oct. 9 in the Heritage Student Life Center. The Red Hawks went into the game with an overall season record of 1-10. Simpson head coach Christy Swagerty-Vilas has been making rotation changes in an attempt to give her team more opportunities to play to their strengths. They went into Friday’s game without junior Megan Heine however who is out because of injury. Heine injured her knee in the rivalry match against William Jessup and has yet to be cleared by doctors. Despite these set backs that have confronted the Red Hawks they were able to display poise and control in their handling of Mills College.
Simpson won the first game of the evening 25-16, scoring the first nine consecutive points. The second game Simpson once again jumped out to an early lead 19-11 and looked as if it was going to cruise to an easy three games to nothing victory. Mills responded in the third game tying the score at 8-8, shifting the momentum in their favor. Simpson answered the challenge and held Mills at 15 points while they rattled off the final 10 points to get the 3-0 victory.
Senior Nicole Eileen led the way for the Red Hawks with eight kills and 14 digs. Junior Kelly Brown provided yet another star performance with six kills and 12 digs. Freshman Kristina Gibson compiled 15 digs to lead the team in overall defensive statistics. Mills got a solid performance from Karen Espinosa who accounted for nine kills and 17 digs. Simpson looks to continue its newfound success against Bethany University Saturday Oct.10 in Scotts Valley, Calif. Game set to start at 5 p.m.
