Simpson splits doubleheader with APU

REDDING, Calif. - The Simpson University baseball team faced off with Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) opponent Azusa Pacific University on Saturday, Feb. 13 at Tiger Field in Redding, Calif. Simpson split the two game series with the APU Cougars, losing 12-4 in the first game and winning 9-3 in the second game.

In the first game, Dustin Stoddard got the start for Coach Rick Bosetti. Stoddard pitched four innings before being relieved by Shane Hillier. Hillier went two innings giving up only two hits before he was relieved by Brad Hurn who finished the game for the Red Hawks. Hurn gave up four hits and the final four runs. Offensively, the Red Hawks were led by Jared Jordan who had three RBIs off two hits.

Game two saw dramatic improvement from the Red Hawks. Joshua Weise started for Simpson. He gave up eight hits and two runs in five innings. In the fifth inning, Rick Hogan came in for two innings of relief, giving up no hits and only one run off an error.

The split with APU puts Simpson at 2-6 overall, one of the best starts Simpson has had since entering into the NAIA. The Red Hawks’ next game will be Wednesday, Feb. 17 at Tiger Field against University of British Columbia. The game is set to start at 2 p.m.
