Simpson splits with Chico State

REDDING, Calif. – The Simpson University baseball team faced No. 8 nationally ranked Chico State University in a doubleheader at Tiger Field on March 23. The teams split the series. The Red Hawks won game one 2-0, and the Wildcats won game two 8-2.
In game one, Red Hawks starting pitcher Shane Hillier only gave up four hits and no runs over sixth-and-a-third innings. Reliever Dustin Stoddard got the final two outs from the Red Hawks in the top of the seventh. Simpson scored runs in the bottom of the third and sixth innings. In the third inning, Shane Battles hit an RBI single. In the sixth inning, Jared Jordan scored on an Aarason Perry single.
In game two, Simpson got off to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Josh Corson hit a one-run home run. Chico State took a 4-1 lead in the top of the third. Chico State’s Devan Braden added two runs to the score by hitting a two-run homer in the top of the fourth. The Wildcats scored one run in both the fifth and sixth innings to bring the final score to 8-2.
Corson was 2-for-3 from the plate with one RBI. Kenny Button was 1-for-3 from the plate with one RBI. Brad Hurn was the losing pitcher. Hurn pitched four innings allowing eight hits, six runs, and three strike outs.
The Red Hawks return to action on Wednesday, March 24 against Pacific University at Tiger Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
