UBC defeats Red Hawks in Game one of the NAIA West tournament

VANCOUVER, British Columbia. – The Simpson University baseball team was defeated by University of British Columbia 14-2 in game of the NAIA West Tournament on Thursday, May 6 in Vancouver, BC. Simpson will face Oregon Tech tomorrow for a chance to advance to the NAIA West Finals.

The Red Hawks tied the game 2-2 with lead off a home run by Nick Spiess and a throwing error by a UBC catcher, which allowed Josh Corson to score.

UBC scored a run in the fourth inning for a 4-2 lead before erupting for nine runs in the fifth inning for a 13-2 lead. The Thunderbirds scored one more run in the sixth for a final score of 14-2.

Spiess and Corson went 1-for-3 from the plate with one run and one RBI. Shane Hillier received the loss allowing nine runs and 14 hits while pitching 4.2 innings.

The Red Hawks will face Oregon Tech on Friday, May 7 at 8:30 a.m. The winner will play the loser of UBC vs. College of Idaho match-up on Friday evening for the right to advance to the finals on Saturday.
