Red Hawks lose two More to Hustlin' Owls

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – The Simpson University baseball team was defeated by Oregon Tech 2-1 and 6-2 on Sunday, March 28 in Klamath Falls, Ore.

In game one, the Red Hawks scored first in the second inning. Jake Gill hit a single to left field which allowed Shane Battles to score. Oregon Tech tied the game in the third inning when Kory Locken hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in Cory Spires.

In the fifth inning, Oregon Tech’s Spires hit a home run to give them the lead and eventual the 2-1 victory over the Red Hawks.

Brad Hurn was the losing pitcher. He allowed four hits and two runs. He struck out three batters. Gill went 1-for-3 from the plate with a RBI, and Battles went 1-for-3 with a run.

In game two, Simpson once again scored first. The run came from a sacrifice bunt by Josh Corson which allowed Nick Spiess to score in the first inning. The Hustlin’ Owls responded in the second inning when Cory Staniforth hit a double down the left field line bringing home Ryson Mauricio.

Oregon Tech scored again in the fifth inning and took the lead when Locken hit a single which allowed Wade Elliot to score. In the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings, Oregon Tech combined to score four runs giving them a 6-1 lead over the Red Hawks.

Simpson tried to rally in the ninth inning. Chad Alden hit a ground out to third base allowing Aarason Perry to score. It just wasn’t enough as Battles flied out to first base for the final out and Oregon Tech earned the 6-2 victory over the Red Hawks.

Andrew Ward was the losing pitcher for the Red Hawks. He pitched 7.2 innings and allowed eleven hits and six runs; he struck out two batters. Perry went 2-for-4 with one run, and Corson picked up a RBI. Spiess was 1-for-3 from the plate with one run.

Simpson returns to action on Friday, April 2 against Bethany University at Tiger Field in Redding, Calif.
