Simpson sweeps four games series against Patten

REDDING, Calif. – The Simpson University baseball team swept Patten University on April 10 at Tiger Field 6-5, 8-0. On April 11, Simpson won 10-5 in game one and 12-7 in game two.

In game one, it took extra innings for the Red Hawks to pull away from Patten 6-5.

Patten scored in the first inning for a 1-0 lead, but the Red Hawks responded when Chris Moody hit a double to deep right-center allowing Josh Corson to score for the tie.

Patten scored runs in the third and fourth innings giving them a 3-1 lead. The Red Hawks had an explosive fifth inning in which they score three runs. Nick Spiess scored off a Moody ground out bring the score to 3-2. Kenny Button hit a double to center allowing Corson to score to tie the game 3-3. Shane Battles doubled to center allowing Button to score to gain the lead 4-3.

Patten went up 5-4 in the top of the seventh, but the Red Hawks scored runs in the bottom of the seventh and eighth to seal the victory 6-5.

Julian Goodin went 2-for-4 from the plate with one run, Battles went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Moody went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Daniel Bartow was the winning pitcher striking out two batters, and allowing one hit and one run. Shane Hillier pitched six innings striking out four batters and allowing four runs and five hits.

In game two, the Red Hawks would had an offensive explosion defeating Patten 8-0.

Aarason Perry went 2-for-3 from the plate with two RBIs, Jake Gill went 2-for-5 with a RBI, Corson went 1-for-4 with a run and a RBI, and Goodin went 1-for-4 with one run and a RBI.

Brad Hurn was the winning pitcher recording his first shutout of the season. He struck out nine batters and only allowed three hits.

In game one, Patten got an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Red Hawks scored two runs in the second for a 2-1 lead. Jared Jordan hit a double to left allowing Button and Drake Crump to score.

Patten tied 2-2 the game in the top of third inning. Gill broke the tie in the fourth inning when he hit a double to right allowing Battles to score. Button hit a double to center allowing Gill to score.

In the sixth inning, Simpson scored six runs to increase their lead to 10-2. Crump started things off with a double to right allowing Button to score. Spiess doubled to right bringing home Jordan and Goodin. Spiess scored when Corson ground out to short. Battles hit a two run home run for the final runs off the inning.

Patten scored three more runs in the seventh inning, but they weren’t enough as Simpson defeated Patten 10-5.

Button went 2-for-3 from the plate with two runs and one RBI, Battles went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Jordan went 2-for-3 with one run and two RBIs.

Dustin Stoddard was the winning pitcher. He struck out five batters and allowed eight hits and five runs.

In game two, the Red Hawks defeated Patten 12-7.

Crump homered in the fifth inning and Button hit a two run home run in the seventh.

Spiess went 2-for-3 with three runs, Perry went 4-for-4 with three RBIs, Button went 2-for-3 with two runs and five RBIs, and Crump was 2-for-3 from the plate with one run and three RBIs.
