Simpson sweeps three games series against Bethany

REDDING, Calif. – The Simpson University baseball team swept Bethany University on April 3 at Tiger Field, 11-9, 1-0 and 8-3.
In game one, the Red Hawks scored first in the bottom of the first inning when Shane Battles hit a single to left center which brought home Josh Corson and Chris Moody for a 2-0 lead. In the third inning, Simpson scored three more runs for a 5-0 lead, starting with Rico Adams scoring on a wild throw by Bethany’s pitcher. Moody hit a double to right which allowed Jared Jordan and Corson to score.
Bethany scored in the third inning when AJ Niebergall scored off a Daniel Perira single to right for a 5-1 score. The Red Hawks scored two more runs when Corson singled to left and Julian Goodin and Jordan to score for a 7-1 lead.
In the top of the fourth, Bethany scored two more runs to bring the score to 7-3. Bethany scored another two runs in the fifth to bring the score to 8-5.
In the sixth inning, Bethany scored two runs to get within one run. The Red Hawks responded in the bottom of the sixth inning by scoring three runs to push the lead to 11-7. Aarason Perry hit a double to left center which allowed Nick Spiess to score. Adams singled to right field and brought home Perry. Joshua Riley hit a triple to deep right center which brought home Adams for Simpson’s final run.
Bethany scored two runs in the seventh, but they weren’t enough as the Red Hawks defeated Bethany 11-9.
Moody was 3-for-4 from the plate with two RBIs, and Battles was 2-for-4 from the plate with two RBIs. Brad Hurn was the winning pitcher going five innings, striking out six, and allowing six hits and five runs.
In game two, Simpson defeated Bethany 1-0. Jake Gill scored the Red Hawks’ only run in the second inning when Bethany’s pitcher threw a wild pitch.
Shane Hillier was the winning pitcher with a shutout. Hillier pitched seven innings only allowing four hits and no runs; he had one strikeout.
Battles went 2-for-3 from the plate, and Gill was 1-for-2 with one run.
The Red Hawks won game three 8-3 over the Bruins.
Spiess hit a two-run home run to left center in the bottom of the second inning for a quick 2-0 lead. Gill scored on fielder’s choice to give the Red Hawks a 3-0 lead heading into the top of third.
Bethany scored in the third inning bringing the score to 3-1. Simpson’s Moody scored off Adams’ hit for a 4-1 lead.
In the fourth inning, Kris Warner flied out to deep right center but DC Collins scored giving the Red Hawks a 5-1 lead. The Bruins responded with two runs in the fifth inning closing the gap within two 5-3.
The Red Hawks scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Adams hit a single to right which allowed Spiess to score. Adams scored when Gill hit a double to left. Gill scored the final run and sealed the victory for the Red Hawks on a wild throw by Bethany’s pitcher.
Warner went 2-for-4 from the plate with two RBIs, and Spiess was 1-for-2 with one run and two RBIs. Gill went 2-for-3 with two runs, and Riley was 2-for-3 from the plate with a RBI.
Dustin Stoddard was the winning pitcher, striking out three batters and allowing three hits and three runs. Stoddard pitched five innings.
