REDDING, Calif. - California State Maritime University (6-15, 4-1 Cal Pac) traveled up I-5 to face Simpson University (5-14, 0-4 Cal Pac) in the Heritage Student Life Center Thursday, Jan. 21. Dwight Bond, Justin Sparks and Jason Stubbs combined to score 68 points, but the Red Hawks fell short against the Keelhaulers, losing 98-87 in overtime.

Simpson outscored the CSU Maritime 34-32 in the first half going 4-of-8 from 3-point range including two three’s by Simpson center Bond who personally went 4-of-4 from beyond the arc.

The second half was marked by high octane scoring from both teams. There wasn’t much defense played in the second period as the teams combined to score 100 points. The Red Hawks went down as many as eight points in the second, but they displayed their mental toughness continually making offensive runs to get themselves back. With five seconds left in the game, down two points, Stubbs received a pass underneath from Andrew Schritter and laid it in tying the game at 83-83.

Overtime was a different matter entirely for the Red Hawks; Maritime went on a 15-4 run in overtime, retiring the Red Hawks hopes for their first conference win of the season.

Maritime had five players in double figures as well as a game high 29 points from Andrew Medeiros.

Sparks continued his MVP caliber season scoring a team high 27 points. Stubbs also played at his normal high level, scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Bond, normally relegated to mostly defensive responsibilities, scored 20 points.
