1st Round Cal Pac Tournament

The Simpson University men’s basketball team has played better on the road than at home. They played several close games on the road, especially against the top teams in the Cal Pac. The Red Hawks look to pull out an upset over No. 3 seed Holy Names University. If the Red Hawks defeat the Hawks, they will continue on the road against No. 2 William Jessup or at home against No. 7 Bethany on Saturday, Feb. 27. 


The Red Hawks defeated Menlo College 74-73 on Feb. 20. Senior Jason Stubbs hit the game winning shot with eight seconds left in the game. The last time Simpson faced Holy Names was on Feb. 11 in the Heritage Student Life Center. The Hawks defeated the Red Hawks 70-55. Ben Clyde led the Hawks in scoring with 18 points and David Scott contributed 16 points. Simpson was lead by senior Justin Sparks with 12 points and junior Pat Magno with 11 points.


Simpson University guard/forward Justin Sparks was selected as the California Pacific Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the second time this season, for the dates of February 15-22. Sparks, a native of San Bernardino, Calif., averaged 24 points and 14 rebounds for the Red Hawks in a 2-0 week. The Red Hawks beat Bethany University 71-66 on Thursday in Redding and won 74-73 over Menlo College in Redding on Saturday.


In the past four games, Holy Names has gone 2-2, losing recently to William Jessup 60-58. David Scotts leads the Hawks in scoring averaging 16.8 and rebounds with 5.8. Trey Davis leads the Hawks in assists with 2.57.
