Red Hawks fall in overtime
Simpson University Sports News
OAKLAND, Calif. - Simpson University men’s basketball team (0-3) traveled to Oakland to face the California Pacific Conference’s first place team Holy Names University (4-0) on Saturday, Jan. 16. The Red Hawks put up a strong fight led by senior Jason Stubbs’ 28 point, 13 rebound performance. Simpson took HNU to overtime but eventually fell by a mere four points, 74-78.
The game was marked by even play by both teams as only two points combined decided both halves. Holy Names had five players in double figures, including a 22 point outing by David Scott. Both teams shot about 38 percent from the field. Simpson, however, turned the ball over 24 times compared to HNU’s 19.
The Red Hawks started overtime with a Stubbs field goal, giving Simpson the early edge in extra minutes. Holy Names followed with a 9-2 run in the next 2:30 to take the lead. HNU was able to hold on to between a 4-6 point lead for the rest of the game. Simpson closed out regulation with a three pointer from Andrew Schritter limiting the lead to four, however, it was too little too late.
Simpson once again has an opportunity to turn around their conference woes when they play CSU Maritime on Thursday, Jan. 21 in the Heritage Student Life Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
