Eagles narrowly edge out Simpson for tournament win

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University men's basketball team opened day one of the SU Classic basketball tournament against West Coast Baptist College. The two teams battled hard the entire game, which was played at the Heritage Student Life Center on Thursday, Dec. 30. The Red Hawks were only down 42-39 at halftime, but the sharp shooting of the West Coast Baptist Eagles was too much for Simpson. The Eagles came out on top with the 80-72 victory.

Senior Pat Magno led Simpson with 26 points and five assists. Junior Calvin Smith followed with 20 points and nine rebounds. Senior Justin Chapel contributed 11 points.

Akeem Smith was the leader for the Eagles. He scored 22 points in 20 minutes of play. Colton Cochrane scored 19 points. Carlos Johnson had a double-double for West Coast Baptist. He scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Simpson returns to actions tomorrow against Asbury College at 7 p.m. West Coast Baptist takes on New Hope Christian College at 5 p.m.
