Simpson defeats PUC in double overtime

ANGWIN, Calif. - Simpson University men's soccer team defeated the Pacific Union Pioneers in dramatic fashion on Sunday, Sept. 26. The Red Hawks defeated the Pioneers 3-2 in double overtime. This was the first California Pacific Conference game for Simpson.

Michael Guzman got things started in the first half for Simpson. His goal early in the first half gave the Red Hawks a 1-0 lead. PUC's Edrie Mauries scored two goals – one in the first half and one in the second – to give the Pioneers the 2-1 edge. Simpson's Michael Haynes scored a goal off a Tyler Goens assist to tie the game at two with only two minutes of regulation play left on the clock. This goal forced the game to go into overtime. After one scoreless period of overtime, Luis Perez scored the winning goal for Simpson.

Perez and Guzman lead the way for Simpson with five shots, two shots on goal, and one goal each. Senior goalie Matt Deacon had six saves.

The Red Hawks' next game is Saturday, Oct. 2 against William Jessup University in Redding, Calif., at the Simpson soccer field. The game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. This game marks Simpson's first home conference game.
