Simpson sweeps Southern Oregon

REDDING, Calif. - The Simpson University softball team swept Southern Oregon University on Saturday, Feb.20 at the Simpson softball field. The Red Hawks won the first game 6-2 and the second game 8-7.
In game one, freshman Morgan Davis went 2-for-3 hitting a two run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. She finished the game with two RBIs and one home run. Senior Candice Vallerga went 3-for-3. Freshmen Hayley Rodriguez picked up the win pitching five innings facing 22 batters, striking out eight and walking one. Rodriguez gave up seven hits and two runs.
In the first inning of game two, Davis hit a home run to center field on a 2-1 count to tie the game 1-1. The Red Hawks scored four more runs in the first inning. Paige Gomez double to left which scored Valerie Rodriquez and Corinne Alexander. Vallega and Gomez scored on a Amanda Ayala’s double to center. The Red Hawks scored again when sophomore catcher Danielle Crisosto hit a home run to left on 0-2 count.
Southern Oregon responded in the top of the sixth, when a Bailey Price single to right field brought in Meghan Laughlin for the score. Jessica Flores’ single to left scored Sarah Wharton. Head coach Wayne Stower replaced sophomore Amanda Crocker with sophomore Trinity Cuff. Cuff allowed one more run in the inning. In the bottom of the seventh with the game tied at 7-7, Vallerga hit a sacrifice fly to left to allow freshman Nicole Hutchins to score the go ahead run.
Crocker pitched five innings allowing six runs and eight hits while facing 23 batters. Crocker struck out four batters. Cuff was granted with the win. She pitched two innings allowing one run and three hits facing nine batters.
The Red Haws post a record of 7-7 overall and will travel to Ashland, Ore., Thursday, Feb.25-27 to play in the Southern Oregon Softball Invitational.
