Lady Red Hawks lose to Vanguard University

COSTA MESA, Calif. - The Simpson University softball team was defeated by Vanguard University 11-1 and 3-0 on Wednesday, March 31 at Costa Mesa, Calif.

In game one, the Red Hawks scored first when Paige Gomez hit a single up the middle which allowed Nichole Hutchins to score for a 1-0 lead. Vanguard responded in the bottom of the first with four runs to take the lead 4-1.

The Red Hawks were unable to respond to the first inning slump as Vanguard scored two runs in the second and five runs in the fourth inning for the 11-1 win.

Krystal Shaw was the losing pitcher allowing seven hits and six runs. She recorded six errors. Amanda Crocker pitched 2.2 innings allowing six hits and five runs. She recorded five errors.

Hutchins went 1-for-3 from the plate, and Stefanie Singh was 1-for-2 with one run and a RBI. Gomez went 1-for-1 from the plate with a RBI.

In game two, the Red Hawks played a solid defensive game holding Vanguard to only three runs, but Vanguard’s pitching shut down Simpson for the victory 3-0.

Valerie Rodriquez pitched 4.1 innings allowing five hits and three runs. Rodriquez struck out seven batters and walked two.

Gomez and Angie Armstrong both went 2-for-3 from the plate, and Amanda Ayala and Bryanna Esquivel each went 1-for-3.
