Weekend sweep for Red Hawks

MEDFORD, Ore. - The Simpson University softball team went 4-0 this weekend in conference play, sweeping Menlo College and Bethany University. On Friday, March 5, Simpson beat Menlo 11-2 and 2-0. On Saturday, March 6, the Lady Red Hawks defeated Bethany 11-2 and 4-3.

In the first game of the doubleheader against Menlo, the Red Hawks scored four first-inning runs and led the rest of the game. Simpson added a pair of runs in the third inning before Menlo scored in the fourth.

Menlo’s Jamie Pauley and Courtney Emry started the rally with back-to-back singles with no outs. Both runners advanced a base on a Nadia Le'i ground out before Alisha Vegas hit a single to center field that allowed Pauley to score. Emry scored when Joedee Lovell reached on an error to make the score 6-2.

The Red Hawks responded by getting both runs back in the top half of the fourth inning. Senior Chalynn Passmore scored off Nicole’s Hutchins single to right field. Freshman standout Morgan Davis scored when Menlo pitcher Emry had a pass ball.

In the sixth inning, the Red Hawks sealed their victory with a three run home run hit by freshman Angie Armstrong. Junior Krystal Shaw was the winning pitcher. She pitched a complete game striking out four batters and only allowing two runs. Sophomore Valerie Rodriguez went 2-for-3 and recorded one RBI, and freshman designated player Amanda Ayala recorded three RBIs and went 2-for-3 at the plate.

In game two, freshman Haley Rodriguez struck out 10 straight batters and recorded her first shutout of the season with the 2-0 win over Menlo.

Sophomore first baseman Corinne Alexander hit a two run home run to left field in the bottom of the sixth to seal Simpson’s victory. Rodriquez was the winning pitcher striking out thirteen batters and only allowing two hits. Alexander went 1-for-3 from the plate and recorded two RBIs.

In game one on Saturday against Bethany University, the Red Hawks used strong pitching from Shaw to defeat the Bruins 2-0.

Sophomore Nikki Feuerbach hit a triple to right field which allowed senior Candice Vallegra to score the first run in the second inning. Freshman catcher Bryanna Esquivel hit a sacrifice bunt and was putout, but Feuerbach scored giving the Red Hawks a 2-0 lead and ultimately the victory.

Shaw was the winning pitcher allowing eight hits and no runs, striking out six batters. Feuerbach was 2-for-2 from the plate with one RBI.

In game two, the Red Hawks came close to losing a 3-1 led in the seventh inning but won 4-3.

Liz Meza scored on a single from Ayala and sophomore catcher Danielle Crisosto tripled to right allowed Ayala to score and give Simpson a 2-0 led in the bottom of the second inning.

In the sixth, Alexander’s single to left allowed Valerie Rodriquez to score giving the Red Hawks a 3-1 lead.

The Bruins responded in the seventh inning when DeVan Cox doubled to left allowing two runs tying the game 3-3. Hayley Rodriquez replaced Amanda Crocker as pitcher in the seventh and closed out the inning striking out Bruins batter Lisa Pinuelas.

In the bottom of the seventh, Crisosto tripled to right to start off the inning. Passmore reached first and brought in the go-ahead run. Pinuelas bobbled the ball and Simpson’s Crisosto scored the winning run 4-3.

Rodriquez was the winning pitcher for the Red Hawks. Crisosto was 3-for-3 from the plate and recorded one RBI.

The Red Hawks are now 13-7 overall and 4-0 in Cal Pac conference play. Simpson returns to action on March 13-14 when they travel to Oregon to face Corban College, Simon Fraser, and Northwest Christian University. On March 13, the Red Hawks will face Corban College at noon and Simon Fraser at 2 p.m. On March 14, they will play Northwest Christian University at noon.
