Red Hawks sweep Jessup

ROCKLIN, Calif. – On March 20, the Simpson University softball team traveled to Rocklin, Calif., to face William Jessup in a softball doubleheader. Simpson defeated William Jessup 8-1 and 2-1.

In game one, William Jessup scored first in the first inning on a sacrifice fly to right field. The Red Hawks responded in the second inning scoring four runs. Valerie Rodriguez hit a ground out to second but earned a RBI when Candice Vallerga scored. Morgan Davis hit a three-run home run to left center on a 1-1 count, brining in Paige Gomez and Danielle Crisosto.

Simpson scored three more runs in the fourth inning, starting with Nicki Feuerbach's single up the middle which allowed Crisosto and Davis to score. A misplayed grounder allowed Nicole Hutchins to score as well during that same play.

In the top of the sixth, Simpson scored one more run to seal the victory when Hutchins scored on a wild throw. Red Hawks' pitcher Krystal Shaw earned the win, holding William Jessup to one run and three hits. Shaw pitched a complete game striking out four batters and had no errors.

Davis went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a home run. Hutchins was 3-for-4 from the plate, and Feuerbach was 2-fo-4 with two RBI.

In game two of the doubleheader, the Red Hawks defeated William Jessup 2-1.

The Red Hawks scored their only two runs in the first inning. Hutchins hit a sacrifice fly to right which scored Davis. Vallerga grounded out to third which would allowed Feuerbach to score.

Neither team scored for the next four innings as William Jessup pitcher Brianna Melgard and Simpson pitcher Haley Rodriquez battled in a pitching duel. Rodriquez gave up a run in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly to center which allowed William Jessup to score a run. Rodriquez closed the inning with a strike out and ground out. In the seventh inning, Rodriquez sealed the victory with two pop outs and a strike out. This gave the Red Hawks a 2-1 victory.

Rodriguez picked up the win. She struck out nine batters and only allowed four hits. Hutchins was 1-for-3 from the plate with a RBI. Stefanie Singh was 3-for-3 from the plate.

The Red Hawks return to action Sunday, March 21 against Eastern Oregon University. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m. at the Simpson softball field.
