Red Hawks show promise against solid Chico State

REDDING, Calif. – The Simpson University's women's volleyball team lost in three straight sets (25-18, 25-14, 26-24) to the Chico State Wildcats at the Heritage Student Life Center in Redding, Calif. This loss brings Simpson to 0-12 on the season.
Senior Kelly Brown started things off for the Lady Red Hawks in set one with a kill over two Chico State blockers (2-1) and an ace (4-3). Simpson tied the match at four with a kill by Chanel Coleman. The Wildcats went on a 18-10 run to take the 23-14 lead. The Lady Red Hawks tried to mount a comeback. Micala Drews had a kill that brought Simpson within eight (23-15). Strong serving from Jenny Hopkins cut the Wildcats' lead to six (23-17). Chico State, however, regained control of the match and won 25-18.
Chico State stared set two with a 5-0 run. Brown scored Simpson's first point of the set with a strong kill (5-1). Later in the set, Jackie Nixon brought the game within four with a tip (8-4). A kill by Coleman brought the game within three (9-6). Chico State dominated the second half of the set by going on a 16-8 run to win 25-14.
Set three was the Lady Red Hawks' best set. Strong serving by Liz Huntsman let Simpson jump out to an early 3-0 lead. A kill by Drews later in the set brought Simpson's lead to 6-3. Chico State rallied and tied the game at 15. They then took a two-point lead (18-16). Another kill by Drews tied the game at 20 a piece. Simpson took a two-point lead off a miss-played ball by Chico and a block by Nixon (22-20). An ace by Brown brought victory in reach for the Lady Red Hawks (24-21). Chico State rallied once again and tied the game at 24 and took a one-point lead (25-24), which forced Simpson to call a timeout. The timeout didn't phase the Wildcats, as they closed the set out with two straight points.
Simpson's next game is Wednesday, Sept. 22 against Pacific Union College in Angwin, Calif. This will be the Lady Red Hawks' first Cal Pac game of the season. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
