Red Hawks battle hard against Eagles

REDDING, Calif. – The Simpson University's women's volleyball team was defeated by the Southwestern College Eagles on Thursday, Sept. 9 in the Heritage Student Life Center. The Red Hawks lost in three straight sets (25-17, 25-21, 26-24).
The Red Hawks lost set one 25-21. They went on a 7-1 run in the middle of the set to tie the game at 16. Southwestern followed with their own 9-1 run to close out the set (25-17).
Simpson lost set two 25-21. Both teams rallied back and fourth for the first seven points. Southwestern then went on an 7-2 run to bring the score to 14-9. The Eagles didn't give up their lead for the rest of the set. The Red Hawks, however, did try to mount a comeback late in the set. Simpson received back-to-back kills from Chanel Coleman and Lauren Godinet to bring the game within four (22-19), Senior Kelly Brown got another kill later in the set for the Red Hawks to bring the score to 24-21.
Even though they lost 26-24, the third set was Simpson's strongest set. Both teams battled hard and fought for each point. The set was evenly matched for the first 14 points. Southwestern then went on a 4-1 run to go up 18-15. The Red Hawks didn't give up, though. The Eagles were forced to call a timeout because Simpson brought the score within one (20-19). Brown had a huge kill for the Red Hawks to bring the game within one again later in the set for Simpson (24-23). The Red Hawks tied the game at 24, but Southwestern scored the last two points of the set to seal their victory (26-24).
The Red Hawks are now 0-10 on the season. Simpson's next game is Tuesday, Sept. 14 in the Heritage Student Life Center against OIT. The game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
