1st Round Cal Pac Tournament

The Lady Red Hawks open up the Cal Pac Conference Tournament as the No. 3 seed at home for the first time in four years. This is the first time in school history that Simpson women’s basketball team has finished this high in conference play. The Lady Red Hawks went 4-2 at home during conference play. Simpson continued their strong play at home on Feb. 20, defeating Menlo College 66-55. 


The last time Pacific Union and Simpson played on Jan. 30, the Lady Pioneers gave the Lady Red Hawks a strong fight. Pacific Union led until the last five minutes of the game when the Lady Red Hawks pulled away for a 57-43 victory. Simpson struggled PUC’s 2-2-1 press and 3-2 defense and shot 34 percent from the field and 19 percent from the three-point line. Senior Alyssa Foster led Simpson with 13 points and nine rebounds. Pacific Union was led by forward Devin Tinny with 15 points and 10 rebounds.


Pacific Union has lost their last six games. Their most recent loss was to Cal State Maritime 63-90. Devin Tinny led the Pioneers in scoring with 12 points. Carla Barlett leads the Pioneers in scoring with 8.62 points per game as well as in steals and assists (1.81spg and 3.71apg). JoAnne Mauries is the top rebounder with 5.25rpg and leads in blocks with .2bpg. The Pioneers are coached by George Barcenas, who in his third season has elevated the Pacific Union women’s basketball to one of the up-and-coming teams in the Cal Pac.
