Holy Names ends Lady Red Hawks' win streak

OAKLAND, Calif. - The Lady Red Hawks were looking to extend their 2-0 conference win streak Saturday, Jan. 16 but were halted by the Holy Names Hawks. Paige Barrett, Liz Thomas and Kylie Shaw’s combined 35 points just weren’t enough for the undefeated Red Hawks as they fell 59-63.

The Red Hawks led for the first five minutes of the game as Kaila Smith and Dominique Simmons ushered in the first five points of the game.

Holy Names recaptured the lead for much of the first half but could never manage to put away the Lady Red Hawks. Simpson briefly regained the lead with 3:50 to play, but Katie Styles hit a jumper with 2:33 left to put HNU back up until the end of the half.

Lesley Vodiscka was the catalyst for Holy Names. HNU attempted to put away Simpson by going up by as much as 12 in the second half.

Simpson responded with a run of its own. With twenty-three seconds left and down three points, Simpson’s Barrett was fouled beyond the arc in the act of shooting. This meant three free-throws and possibility of tying the game. Barrett went 2-for-3 from the free throw line putting Simpson down one.

Simpson fouled Vodiscka with who went 1-1 from the line. Simpson retained possession but Shaw dribbled the ball out of bounds. Thomas stepped out of bound while HNU was attempting and inbound and received a technical foul allowing Holy Names to take two free throws and keep the ball.

HNU made both free throws and maintained possession. Up four with possession and only a few seconds remaining, Holy Names simply ran out the clock for the win.

Simpson looks to bounce back from their first conference loss when they face CSU Maritime on Thursday, Jan.21 in the Heritage Student Life Center. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
