Simpson loses by one in home opener against Northwest Christian

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University's women's basketball team opened their regular season play with a home game against Northwest Christian University on Tuesday, Nov. 9. Even though they lost 61-60, the Lady Red Hawks showed tenacity and drive to come from a 10-point halftime deficit to bring the game nearly within their reach.
Simpson came out slow against the Beacons in the first half. Their sloppy offense and poor defense had them down 40-30 in the first half.
In the second half, Simpson regrouped and started to chip at the Beacons' lead The Lady Red Hawks eventually took a one-point lead (58-57) with 1:38 left in the game. Northwest Christian's Lori Renner hit a 3-pointer to put the Beacons up by two with 1:04 left. Simpson senior Kylie Shaw came down on a fast break and tied the game at 60 apiece with 52 seconds left in the game. Simpson forced a turnover with eight seconds left on the clock and called a timeout. With seven seconds left, Simpson's Charissa Murakami inbounded the ball and threw a high pass over Shaw's head which resulted in a turnover. Northwest Christian's Aly Burns was fouled on a three-point attempt with no time on the clock. Burns hit her free throw which broke the tie and ended in a 61-60 win for the Beacons.
The Lady Red Hawks were led by freshman Nichole Jones, who had 16 points and five rebounds. Seniors Tiffany Johnson and Kylie Shaw each contributed 10 points. Lindsey Shearer and Martha Taylor, who each had 12 points, led northwest Christian.
Simpson returns to action this weekend when they take a two-game Oregon road trip. They play Warner Pacific College on Friday, Nov. 12 at 5:30 p.m. in Portland, Ore. On Saturday, Nov. 13, they face off against Concordia University-Portland at 2 p.m.
