Lady Red Hawks lose in second round of playoffs

Simpson University Sports News

ATHERTON, Calif. - The Simpson University women's basketball team's "road to the Tyson Center" came to a halt on Friday, Feb. 26 after losing to Menlo College 73-64 in the Cal Pac semi-finals.

For the first time in school history, the Lady Red Hawks were in the semi-finals of the Cal Pac Conference tournament. They were one game away of reaching their ultimate goal of playing in the conference finals and earning a trip to the NAIA II national tournament. The Menlo Oaks put a stop to that dream. The Lady Oaks came out on a mission to seek revenge from the previous loss against the Lady Red Hawks on Feb. 20 (66-55) and did so with intense defense. In the first half, Menlo held Simpson to 31 percent from the field and 0-5 from the three-point line. The Oaks shot 43 percent from the field and 42 percent from the three-point line, giving them a 39-22 led at halftime.

In the second half, it was all the same as Simpson could never get in a flow of the game due to the Menlo defense. The Lady Red Hawks cut the lead down to nine, but it was too late as Menlo pulled away 73-64.

Senior Alyssa Foster led Simpson in scoring with 19 points and seven rebounds. Dominique Simmons contributed 12 points, and sophomore Paige Barrett followed with 11 points.
