Slow start hurts Lady Red Hawks

REDDING, Calif. - The Simpson University women’s basketball team (5-21, 4-4 Cal-Pac) looked to come back from an earlier season loss at Holy Names University (17-10, 8-1 Cal-Pac) when the HNU Hawks visited Simpson Thursday night. Holy Names, however, forced 39 turnovers in the game and edged the Simpson by 11, 54-65.
Simpson was down by as much as 17 points in the first half and came back to within three with 13 minutes to play in the second half. Jamie-Leigh Ronolo stepped up for HNU, leading them to push the lead back up to 11 with 40 seconds left. The field goal percentage for both teams was even at 40 percent.
Ronolo scored a game high 25 points for HNU, going 9-for-16 on the night. No other Lady Hawk scored in double digits; however, Lesley Vodiska grabbed nine rebounds and had nine steals. Liz Thomas’ 14 points off 6-for-8 shooting led Simpson. Paige Barrett got into second half foul trouble and was limited to eight points.
