Simpson competes in first invitational of the season

TRINIDAD, Calif. - The Red Hawks men and women's cross country teams were in action for the fist time this season on Saturday, Sept. 10 where they competed in the Humboldt State Invitational. The men finished in sixth place out of six and the women finished in seventh place out of seven teams that were scoring runners. The competition was very competitive with school like Cal St. Monterey Bay, Chico State, Fresno Pacific, College of the Redwoods, Sonoma State and the host Humboldt State all competing for the top spot.
For the men it was Chico State posting a perfect score of 15 points, followed by Humboldt State with 56 points, CSU Monterey Bay with 91 points, Fresno Pacific with 94 points, College of the Redwoods with 148 and Simpson finishing with 169 points in the team competition. Chico State's Anthony Costales led the individual runners with a time of 24:58.89 on the 8k course. The first runner to finish for Simpson was Brad Arkens who had a time of 29:35.55 followed by Red Hawk runners Matt Eyman (31:46.92), Kevin Martin (32:30.19), Mark McCutcheon (34:04.20) and George Park (34:04.20).
As for the women it was again Chico State leading the way in the team competition with 15 points. They were followed by CSU Monterey Bay with 56 points, Humboldt State with 88 points, Sonoma State with 109, Pacific with 122, Fresno Pacific with 178 and Simpson finished in seventh with 193 points. Leading the individual runners was Chico State's Alia Gray who turned in a time of 21:44.67 on the 6k course. The first finishing Red Hawk was Rebekah Studebaker with a time of 25:36.50 followed by Hannah Dewater (28:18.85), Amelia Rederburg (28:36.52), Janet Ashdown (28:38.28), Christina Coleman (28:51.46), Alyssa Hope (29:38.22) and Rachel Harrison (42:30.40) for the rest of the Red Hawks.
The next competition that they Red Hawks will be participating in will be on Saturday, Sept. 17 in Oakland, Calif. in the Mills College invitational.
