Simpson goes 0-2 against Cal Baptist

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Simpson University's men's baseball team played California Baptist University on Thursday, Jan. 27 and Friday, Jan. 28 in Riverside, Calif. Cal Baptist won both games. On Thursday, they defeated the Red Hawks 10-3. On Friday, they handed Simpson a 12-0 shutout.

In game one, the Lancers took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. The Red Hawks tied the game at two in the top of the fifth inning, but Cal Baptist rallied quickly and took a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth. The Lancers scored five more runs in the game to clinch the 10-2 victory.

Junior Chuck Matthey and freshman Jared Valdanbrini scored Simpson's two runs. Kevin Odom went 3-for-3 for the Lancers and scored three runs. Brain Sharp went 1-for-4 at the plate, scored two runs, and drove in three runs. Ryan Douglas, Eric Zaragoza, Josh Manzano, and Jordan Kiesz all scored one run a piece for Cal Baptist.

Senior Josh Riche was the losing pitcher for Simpson. He pitched six innings and gave up seven hits and five runs. Sophomore Andrew Douglas pitched for 1.2 innings and gave up two hits and five runs. Taylor Siemens was the winning pitcher for Cal Baptist. He gave up five hits and two runs in six innings of work.

In game two, Cal Baptist dominated the Red Hawks. The Lancers only gave up five hits and no runs. They scored runs in the second, third, fifth, seventh, and eighth innings.

Junior Garrett Barnett, senior Rico Adams, and Matthey all went 1-for-2 for Simpson. Matt Daugherty, Zach Esquerra, Zaragoza, and Manzano all scored two runs each for Cal Baptist. Matt Johnson, Nate Hostetter, Odom, and Kiesz all chipped in one run a piece for the Lancers. Zaragoza went a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate.

Junior Matthew Hart was the losing pitcher for Simpson in game two. He pitched four innings and gave up nine hits and seven runs. Sophomore Kris Warner pitched for three innings ad gave up three hits and three runs. Junior Trace Klein pitched for one inning and gave up three hits and two runs. Devyn Rivera was the winning pitcher. He pitched five innings and gave up three hits and no runs. Tavis Barnes pitched four innings for Cal Baptist and only gave up two hits.

The Red Hawks finish up their five-game Southern California road trip with a game against California Lutheran University on Saturday, Jan. 29 in Thousand Oaks, Calif. The first pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 11 a.m.
