Simpson struggles against NCAA Division II Chico State

CHICO, Calif. - Simpson University's men's baseball team took on NCCAA Division II Chico State University in a preseason doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 5 at Nettleton Stadium in Chico, Calif. Chico State's impressive hitting powered the Wildcats over the Red Hawks in both games. Chico won 21-9 in game one and 6-2 in game two.
In game one, Chico took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Simpson took a 4-2 lead in the top of second. The Wildcats countered and scored four runs in the bottom of the second to take the 6-2 lead. The Red Hawks retook the lead in the top of the third by scoring three runs to bring the score to 7-6. They added to their lead in the top of the fourth by scoring two more runs (9-7). Chico tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. The Wildcat's pitching held the Red Hawks scoreless for the rest of the game. They scored 12 more runs to cap their 21-9 victory.
Junior Josh Weise was the starting pitcher for Simpson. He pitched 1.1 innings and gave up five hits and six runs. Senior Brad Hurn replaced Weise and pitched 2.2 innings. He allowed six hits and two runs. Senior Rico Adams pitched the next 1.1 innings and gave up three hits and three runs. He recorded the loss. Senior Rick Hogan relieved Adams and pitched two-thirds of an inning. He have up one hit and two runs. Junior Adrian DeMar pitched the seventh and eighth innings. In his two innings of work, he allowed four hits and seven runs. Sheldon Lechuga was the winning pitcher for Chico.
Senior Chris Moody started Simpson's scoring with a solo home run in the second inning. Junior Angel Marti hit a double which allowed seniors Chad Alden and Adams and sophomore Kris Warner to score. In the third, junior Daveron Ross scored when junior Chuck Matthey hit a double to left center field. Moody and Warner also scored in this inning. Junior Josh Corson scored in the fourth off a Chico wild pitch. Ross scored off a Matthey single to Chico's shortstop.
In game two, Chico State again took an early lead. The Wildcats went up 1-0 in the top of the first. Simpson tied the game in the top of the third when Alden scored off a Corson single to left field. Chico State took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third. Simpson tied the game in the top of the fifth when Warner scored off an Alden single to center field. Chico rallied in the bottom of the inning by scoring four runs to seal their 6-2 victory.
Senior Josh Riche was the starting pitcher for Simpson. He allowed three hits and two runs. Junior Scott McKeen was the losing pitcher for Simpson. He gave up two hits and four runs. Junior Daniel Chavez and senior Dustin Stoddard each pitched over an inning of scoreless baseball. Scott Newberry was the winning pitcher for the Wildcats.
The Red Hawks return to action by hosting their first home game of the season on Wednesday, Feb. 9. They will host Cascade Conference opponent University of British Columbia. The game will be played at Tiger Field in Redding, Calif. The game is set to start at 2 p.m.
