Menlo sweeps four game series against Red Hawks

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University's men's baseball team traveled to Atherton, Calif., to play a four game series against conference opponent Menlo College on Saturday, April 9 and Sunday, April 10. The Oaks swept the four-game series. They won 4-3 in game one and 12-8 in game two on Saturday. On Sunday, they won game one 3-2 and game two 6-5.
In game one on Saturday, Simpson took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and added two more runs to their score in the top of the fourth to take a 3-0 lead. Menlo cut the lead to one in the bottom of the fourth. A two-run fifth gave the Oaks a 4-2 lead and winning advantage over the Red Hawks.
Junior Josh Weise was the losing pitcher for the Red Hawks. He pitched six innings and gave up four hits and four runs. Junior Daveron Ross went 1-for-2 with two runs. Senior Chris Moody scored one run.
In game two, Simpson was down by one (5-4) wen Menlo had a huge seventh inning. The Oaks drove in seven runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the 12-4 lead. The Red Hawks tried to rally in the top of they eighth. They scored fours runs to bring the score to 12-8, but they couldn't edge past Menlo.
Senior Josh Riche was the losing pitcher for Simpson. He allowed eight hits and five runs. Juniors Josh Yachinich and Matthew Hart and sophomore Nick Mikkelson also pitched. Junior Angel Marti went 2-for-5 with two runs. Moody went 1-for-4 with one run. Junior Garrett Barnett went 3-for-5 with two runs. Senior Chad Alden scored two runs.
In game one on Sunday, Menlo took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first and never looked back. Simpson did score two runs in the top of the sixth to bring the score within one (3-2), but it wasn't enough to gain a victory over the Oaks.
In game two, Simpson had a 5-4 lead going into the ninth, but they couldn't maintain the lead. Menlo scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to take the 6-5 lead and the one-run victory.
Senior Dustin Stoddard was the losing pitcher for Simpson. He pitched 8.2 innings and allowed 10 hits and six runs. Marti went 1-for-4 with two runs. Ross went 1-for-5 with one run. Junior Chuck Matthey went 1-for-four with one run. Barnett went 1-for-three with one run and four RBI.
The Red Hawks return to action on Wednesday, April 13 against OIT in Redding, Calif. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
