Simpson defeats No. 1 Menlo to reach championship game

ATHERTON, Calif. - Simpson University's men's baseball team upset No. 1 Menlo College in round three of the NAIA West Regional Qualifier on Thursday, May 5. The Red Hawks pulled off a 6-5 victory in nine innings.
Simpson had a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the second. In the first, junior Daveron Ross scored on junior Garrett Barnett's double to left center. In the second, junior Matthew Alton reached home on junior Josh Corson's single shallow center. In the bottom of the second, Menlo exploded for four runs to take a 4-2 lead. In the fifth, the Red Hawks scored two runs to tie the game. Corson scored on a Menlo error. Junior Angel Marti reached home on junior Chuck Matthey's single to right. Simpson took a 5-4 lead in the top of the sixth when junior Chad Alden scored on Alton's double to right. Menlo tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. The Red Hawks scored the winning run in the top of the ninth. Ross scored his second run of the game on Matthey's single to left.
Junior Adrian DeMar picked up the win for Simpson. He pitched the last two innings and only gave up one hit.
Simpson returns to action in the championship game of the NAIA West Regional Qualifier against the College of Idaho at noon on Friday, May 6. The winner of this game will automatically advance to the NAIA National Tournament. This game is the first time these two teams have met all season.
