Red Hawks win two games against OIT

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. - Simpson University's men's baseball team took on NAIA West opponent OIT on Wednesday, April 6 in Klamath Falls, Ore. The Red Hawks won both games of the doubleheader. They won game one 5-4 and won game two 10-7.
In game one, Simpson took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when junior Angel Marti scored on senior Rico Adams' single. The Red Hawks added four runs to their lead in the top of the third to go up 5-0. Junior Josh Corson scored when senior Chris Moody was walked. Adams and junior Daveron Ross reached home on junior Chuck Matthey's single. Moody scored on junior Garrett Barnett's double.
OIT brought the score to 5-1 in the bottom of the fourth. The Owls made things interesting in the bottom of the sixth by scoring three runs to cut the Red Hawks' lead to one (5-4). Simpson held on to this small lead and took home the 5-4 victory.
The Red Hawks had three two-run innings in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to take the 7-1 lead. In the top of the third, Marti scored when Ross hit into a double-play. Corson scored off a Moody single. In the top of the fourth, Marti hit a two-run homer to bring in senior pinch runner Chad Alden and himself. In the top of the fifth, sophomore Kris Warner's single drove in Matthey and Moody.
The Owls scored a total of three runs in the seventh and eighth innings to bring the game within one run (8-7). The Red Hawks responded by scoring two runs in the top of the ninth. Matthey and Barnett each scored an unearned run. These runs gave Simpson the 10-7 lead and eventual victory.
Senior Dustin Stoddard was the winning pitcher. He pitched five innings and allowed five hits and four runs. DeMar picked up another save, his fourth of the season. He pitched 1.2 innings and only allowed one hit.
Simpson returns to action against Cascade Conference opponent Menlo College on Saturday, April 10 and Sunday, April 11 in Atherton, Calif.
