REDDING, Calif. - On Saturday, April 16, Simpson University's men's baseball team swept a doubleheader against OIT. The Red Hawks won the first game 5-1 and game two 7-5.

OIT started scored first in game one in the fourth inning when second baseman Colin Stock was hit by a pitch. He moved to second base on a single by first baseman Ryan Hayden and scored on another single by designated hitter Phil Sacks.

Simpson scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the 3-1 lead. Junior right fielder Chuck Matthey drew a walk and moved to third on a double by senior catcher Matthew Alton. Sophomore shortstop Kris Warner was walked, which resulted in the loading of the bases. Junior Angel Marti walked to score Matthey. Third baseman Josh Corson drove in senior Chad Alden who was pinch running for Alton. With the bases still loaded, senior Rico Adams was hit by a pitch and forced in Warner for a 3-1 Red Hawks' lead.

In the sixth inning, Simpson scored two more runs. Junior designated hitter Graig Lonergan scored on a double by junior left fielder Garrett Barnett, and junior center fielder Daveron Ross scored on a sacrifice fly to right field after walking and moving to third on the Barnett double.

Senior Brad Hurn was the winning pitcher. He pitched a complete game and only allowed OIT in the seven inning game. OIT's Craig Kathol took the loss.

The second game was a back-and-forth contest most of the way. Simpson scored in the bottom of the first when Corson walked, moved to third on an Adams' single, and scored on a throwing error by OIT catcher Kyle Hansen.

OIT scored in the second inning on a home run by third baseman Brad Walters. The Owls added another run in the third inning when shortstop Zach Earle reached on an error, moved to third on a single by left fielder Trent Smith and scored on a sacrifice fly by second baseman Colin Stock.

The Red Hawks scored in their half of the second inning when Marti crossed the plate after singling, moving up on an OIT error and scoring on a Ross single. Corson, who had reached base on the error, scored on a single by Barnett.

OIT retook the lead scoring twice in the fifth inning. Hansen hit a leadoff home run. After reaching base on a fielder's choice, center fielder Kory Locken scored on a triple by Stock. Simpson junior Matt Hart relieved the Red Hawks' starter senior Dustin Stoddard to close out the OIT scoring threat.

The Simpson bats again came to life in the sixth inning. Ross led off with a single and scored on a triple by Barnett. Barnett reached home on a double by Matthey. Marti later doubled to score Matthey.

OIT added their final run of the game in the seventh inning. Hansen led off with a single and scored later on a wild pitch. Simpson scored their final run in the eighth inning. Matthey singled, advanced and scored on a sacrifice fly by Warner.

Hart earned the win, and junior Adrian DeMar worked the last two innings to earn the save. Zach O'Hanen takes the loss for OIT.

Both teams return to Tiger Field in Redding, Calif., on Sunday, April 17 for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
