Red Hawks improve conference record to .500 against OIT

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University's men's baseball team finished a four-game weekend series against OIT on Sunday, April 17 in Redding, Calif. On Saturday, the Red Hawks won both games (game one 5-1 and game two 7-5). On Sunday, Simpson closed out the series with two more wins. They won game one 3-2 and game two 10-8. These victories put the Red Hawks at .500 in the Cascade Conference (11-11).
In game one, OIT took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Simpson got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning when senior Josh Riley hit a sacrifice fly to bring home junior Garrett Barnett. The Owls retook the lead in the top of the seventh. The Red Hawks scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to take the 3-2 lead and the eventual victory. Junior Angel Marti scored the tying run when junior Graig Lonergan singled to center. Senior Chad Alden scored the winning run off Riley's single to left.
Junior Adrian DeMar was the winning pitcher. He pitched the final 0.2 inning of the game and didn't allow any hits or runs. Junior Josh Weise was the starting pitcher. He pitched six innings and allowed five hits and one run. Junior Matthew Hart pitched 0.1 inning and gave up three hits and one run. Marti and Barnett went 2-for-3 with one run each. Alden scored one run, and Riley had two RBI.
In game two, Simpson jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Barnett singled to right and drove in both senior Rico Adams and junior Daveron Ross. OIT had a 5-3 lead going into the bottom of the fourth when Simpson exploded for four runs to take the 7-5 lead. Barnett scored when Riley bunted and OIT had a wild throw. Junior Chuck Matthey scored when two consecutive batters were hit by pitches. Alden scored when Marti reached first on a fielder's choice. Lonergan reached home on an OIT passed ball.
OIT tied the game at seven in the top of the sixth. Simpson regained the lead (8-7) in the bottom of the inning when junior Josh Corson scored on a series of stolen bases and OIT errors. The Red Hawks added two more runs to their lead by scoring one run in both the seventh and eighth innings. In the seventh, Matthey reached home on Marti's sacrifice fly to left field. In the eighth, Barnett scored when Matthey singled to left. OIT scored one more run in the top of the ninth, but it wasn't enough. Simpson won 10-8.
Hart was the winning pitcher. He pitched one inning and allowed one hit and two runs. Senior Josh Riche started the game. He pitched 2.1 innings and gave up eight hits and three runs. Junior Daniel Chavez pitched 2.2 innings and allowed three hits and two runs. DeMar pitched the final three innings of the game. He gave up one hit and one run.
Simpson returns to action on Wednesday, April 20 against OIT in a doubleheader in Klamath Falls, Ore. The first pitch is set for 2 p.m.
