Red Hawks earn first conference victory

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University's men's baseball team took on visiting Cascade Conference opponent Patten University on Saturday, March 5. The Red Hawks came away with the 5-4 victory in seven innings of play.
Patten took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Simpson tied the game at one in the bottom of the second when senior Chris Moody scored off junior Chuck Matthey's triple to right field. Patten took a 4-1 lead by scoring runs in the third and fifth innings. The Red Hawks rallied in the bottom of sixth by scoring four runs to earn the 5-4 victory.
Sophomore Kris Warner started Simpson's sixth inning scoring drive when he reached home on Moody's single to left field. Junior Garrett Barnett scored when Matthey was walked with the bases loaded. Senior Josh Riley scored on a Patten wild pitch. Junior Daveron Ross reached home when senior teammate Angel Marti was walked.
Junior Matthew Hart was the winning pitcher. He pitched one inning and gave up only one hit. Senior Brad Hurn started the game for Simpson. He pitched five innings and allowed four hits and four runs. Junior Adrian DeMar closed the game and didn't give up any hits on runs.
Both Simpson and Patten return to action on Sunday, March 6 in game two of the weekend series. The first pitched is scheduled to be thrown at noon.
