Simpson goes 1-3 in weekend play against Willamette

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University's men's baseball team played a four-game series against Willamette University played on Feb. 19-20. On Saturday, Feb. 19, Simpson won game one 7-3 and lost game two 9-2. On Sunday, Feb. 20, the Red Hawks were shut out in both games. They lost game one 11-0 and game two 2-0.

In game one, Willamette scored in the top of the first. Simpson tied the game at one in the top of the second when senior Rico Adams scored. Simpson added four runs to their score in the bottom of the third to take the 3-1 lead. Senior Chris Moody's double brought juniors Angel Marti and Josh Corson home. Junior Daveron Ross scored on Adams' single to right field. Junior Garrett Barnett's double to center field allowed Moody to score. The Red Hawks added one run to their lead in the bottom of the fifth when Moody scored his second run of the game. Willamette scored runs in the sixth and eighth innings to bring the score to 6-3. Simpson scored an additional run in the bottom of the eighth when Ross scored off junior Chuck Matthey's single to right field. This game Simpson the 7-3 winning edge.

Junior Scott McKeen was the winning pitcher. He pitched 7.2 innings and allowed six hits and three runs. Junior Adrian DeMar pitched the final 1.1 innings and only gave up one hit.

In game two, Willamette once again started out the top of the first by scoring one run to take the early lead. They took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Simpson scored in the bottom of the third when freshman Jared Valdanbrini reached home on a Willamette error to bring the score to 2-1. The Red Hawks tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when Barnett hit a solo home run. Willamette scored rune in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to gain the 9-2 victory.

Senior Josh Riche was the losing pitcher. He pitched 4.1 innings and allowed six hits and four runs. Blake Paisley was the winning pitcher for Willamette. He pitched six innings and gave up three hits and two runs.

In game three, Willamette shut the Red Hawks out 11-0. Even though Simpson didn't score any runs, they did get eight hits. Moody went 3-for-3 from the plate. Sophomore Kris Warner went 2-for-4. Junior Graig Lonergan, Marti, Barnett, and Matthey all went 1-for-4.

Junior Josh Weise was the started pitcher for Simpson. He gave up five hits and five runs. Junior Matthew Hart pitched the final five innings and gave up six hits and six runs. Weise recorded the loss.

In game four, the Red Hawks were one again shut out. The game remained scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when Willamette scored their two runs. Adams recorded Simpson's only two hits for the game. Senior Dustin Stoddard recorded the loss. He pitched 5.2 innings and gave up four hits and two runs.

Simpson returns to action against conference opponent Patten University on March 5-6 in Redding, Calif. The games will be played at Tiger Field in Redding. The first pitch for Saturday, March 5 is set for 1 p.m. The first pitch for Sunday, March 6 is set for noon.
