Red Hawks earn first conference victory

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University men's basketball team took on the Bethany University Bruins in their fifth conference game of the season on Saturday, Jan. 22 in the Heritage Student Life Center. The Red Hawks came away with the 74-49 victory over Bethany for their first Cal Pac win of the season.

The Red Hawks jumped out to a 43-26 halftime lead. Simpson held Bethany to 38 percent shooting from the field and forced 12 turnovers. The Red Hawks shot 45 percent from the field and were led by senior Justin Chapel, who had 12 points and was perfect from the field (5-5 FG) and from behind the arc (2-2 3pt.).

In the second half, it was much the same as the Red Hawks defense held Bethany to nine percent from the three-point line and 23 points in the half. Simpson shot an amazing 42 percent from three-point line. Junior Calvin Smith led Simpson's second half scoring with eight.

Chapel and Smith each scored 17 points. Senior Pat Magno once again had an amazing night with 15 points and nine assists.

Bethany was led by Travis Derochowski, who had a double-double consisting of 17 points and 16 rebounds.

Simpson returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 27 against Menlo College at the Heritage Student Life Center. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
