Red Hawks earn first win of season

Simpson University Sports News

REDDING, Calif. - The Red Hawks men's basketball team were in action on Dec. 2 in search of their first win when they took on the Deacons from New Hope Christian College. The Red Hawks finally got the monkey of their back with a 27-point victory (80-53).

Both teams struggled to find their shooting touch in the first half. The Red Hawks only shot 28.9 percent from the field. The Deacons only managed 12.5 percent from the field and 0 percent from the three-point line, going 0-for-10 from beyond the arc. The Red Hawks had to take a little comfort in the fact they were getting good shots, but they just weren't falling. Even with the poor offensive showing, the Red Hawks took a 32-18 lead into the halftime break.

In the second half the Red Hawks finally had their shots fall. Ian Corella got the ball rolling for the team. Nick Dalby also had the hot hand for the Red Hawks hitting some huge 3-pointers. When the game was out of reach for the Deacons, Red Hawk guard Calvin Smith got in on the act hitting some three's of his own. In fact, all but two Red Hawks scored on the night. Simpson finished the night off in style with a 80-53 victory.

Dalby led all scorers with 17 points. Corella finished with 14 points and nine rebounds. Smith added 14 points and seven rebounds. Phillip Templeton was the only other Red Hawk in double figures with 10 points.

This first win of the year for the Red Hawks brings their record to 1-9. They will be in action on Saturday, Dec. 10 when they will host Chico State at 8 p.m.
