Red Hawks struggle in second half against Hope International


FULLERTON, Calif. - Simpson University men's basketball team traveled to take on Royals from Hope International University in search for their first win of the season on Saturday, Nov. 5. The Red Hawks started the game off well but faded late and the Royals were able to secure the 81-70 win.

In the first half, it was Red Hawk stand out Bryan Castillo who was on fire as he went crazy from behind the three point line finishing the half with six three pointers. In addition, he was 4-for-4 from the foul line and finished the half with an incredible 22 points. The Royals were able to weather the storm and kept it close and Matt Green hit a three to take a 47-45 lead into the halftime break.

Shortly after the break the Royals would go on a 9-0 run that would take control of the game and the Red Hawks were never be able to come back.

For the Royals, Jordan Gipson finished with 16 points, and Jeremy Kilgore had 14 points. Sophomore David Wedge had nine points and nine rebounds. Kris Rosales passed out six assists in the winning effort for the Royals.

Castillo only added two more points in the second half finishing with 24 points, leading the Red Hawks in scoring. Two other Red Hawks got into double figures. Travis Derochowski and Ian Corella both scored 10 points for the Red Hawks. Calvin Smith had six points and six assists on the night.

The loss put the Red Hawks' record at 0-2 on the season. They look to right the ship on Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m., when they kick off their home schedule against the Beacons from Northwest Christian University.
