Red Hawks bested by Royals at home
Simpson University Sports News
REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University men's basketball team was in action on Saturday afternoon as they took on the Royals from Hope International University in their final game before the Christmas break. It wasn't the way that the Red Hawks wanted to end 2011 as they lost to the Royals 55-43.
In the first half the Red Hawks started off hot, jumping out to a 15-5 lead early on in the half. The points were spread around with Bryan Castillo leading the way for the Red Hawks with 5 points. Jordan Collins, Calvin Smith and Ian Corella all added 4 in the half. Although the Royals were struggling to get any offensive flow going, they were able to chip away at the Red Hawk lead and keep themselves in the game from the free throw line. The Royals shot 15 free throws in the half converting on 11. Despite the Royals' poor shooting from the field, (3 for 23), they managed to cut the margin to four at the halftime break, 21-17.
The Royals were determined to turn the game around, but the Red Hawks were able to hold the game close for the first part of the second half. The Royals were able to grab their first lead of the game with 14:57 to play when Royal forward Steve Jurich put them ahead 31-29. After that, the Royals would slowly build their lead with more conversions from the charity stripe. Jeremy Kilgore put the Royals up by 12 with 7:10 to play after a good free throw. The Red Hawk offense was not able to regain control as the turned the ball over too many times to allow themselves to fight back and the Royals would win the game 55-43. The Red Hawks only shot 11 free throws in the game compared to the 32 that the Royals attempted. But perhaps more concerning was the 23 turnovers that the Red Hawks committed in the game.
Kris Rosales and Jeremy Kilgore led all scorers for the Royals both scoring 12 points. Jordan Gipson added 11 for the Royals while Steve Jurich had a double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds. As for the Red Hawks, Calvin Smith led the way with 9 points.
Up next the Red Hawks will look to improve on their 1-11 record in a road game which will take place in Klamath Falls, Oregon, on Monday, January 2, 2012, against the Owls from Oregon Tech at 7:30 pm. It will be their third meeting with the Owls this season with the Owls victorious in both previous matches, 89-54 on November 15th and 89-68 on November 25th.
