Simpson University Sports News
REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University men's basketball team hosted their first home game of the season on Wednesday, Nov. 9 against the Beacons from Northwest Christian University. Both teams battled hard, but the Beacons were able to come away with the 58-56 victory.
The Red Hawks opened the game well and jumped out to an early lead due in great part to the solid play of post Travis Derochowski. Beacons guard Travis Pacos hit some huge three's to keep the game close for Northwest Christian, and the Beacons took and a one-point lead into the halftime break.
The second half was another close affair. Calvin Smith and Bryan Castillo led the Red Hawks in the second half. Simpson struggled to control the hot shooting of Northwest Christian's Trevor Parker and Jordan Buhler. Then in the dying seconds of the game with the Red Hawks trailing by two, Smith pulled up from deep and drained a three to give Simpson the 56-55 lead. The Beacons called a timeout and held the ball for the last shot. Parker hit the game winning shot for the Beacons with 0.1 seconds remaining on the clock.
Parker finished the game with 15 points for the Beacons. Buhler contributed 13 points and six assists; Pacos had 11 points. Castillo led the way offensively for Simpson with 16 points and four assists. Smith had 11 points and seven assists; and Derochowski had 13 points and six rebounds for the Red Hawks.
The loss sees the Red Hawks' record fall to 0-3 on the season. Their next game is in Orem, Utah against Utah Valley on Friday, Nov. 11 in a game that tips off at 4:30 p.m.
