Simpson loses conference opener to Pacific Union

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University men's basketball team started their regular season against the Pacific Union Pioneers on Thursday, January 6. The Red Hawks were defeated 76-60 by Pacific Union in the Cal Conference opener.
The Pioneers and Red Hawks both played very solid defense in the first half. Simpson was up by one at halftime (28-27). There were four ties and 10 lead changes in the first half.
In the second half, the Pioneers came out hot. They went up by as much as 10 points early in the second half. Simpson closed the gap to six, but lack of depth hurt the Red Hawks. The Pioneers went up 16 points to seal the victory.
Senior Pat Magno led the Red Hawks with 14 points and six assists. Juniors Phillip Templeton and Bryan Castillo each scored 13 points, and Templeton had 10 rebounds. Junior Calvin Smith followed with 11 points and seven rebounds.
Aren Rennacker led the Pioneers with17 points. Josh Jewett had a double-double consisting of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Will Bell and Steven Catalon each scored 11 points.
Simpson will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 13 against William Jessup in Rocklin, Calif. Tip-off set for 7:30 p.m.
