Red Hawks win first game of the season

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University men's basketball team defeated New Hope Christian College 88-71 on Saturday, Jan. 1 on the last day of the SU Classic basketball tournament.
The Red Hawks had a 34-point lead going into halftime (60-26). Simpson held New Hope to 28 percent from the field and 22 percent for the three-point line. The Red Hawks also shot a season high 60 percent from three-point line and 63 percent from the field.
In the second half, New Hope Christian outscored the Red Hawks 45-28. Simpson's lead was so large, however, that New Hope's second half performance couldn't make up the deficit. The Red Hawks defeated New Hope 88-71, earning their first win of the season.
Junior Bryan Castillo lead Simpson with 21 points. He shot 50 percent from the three-point line. Senior Justin Chapel contributed 16 points, and senior Pat Magno followed with 15 points and six rebounds. New Hope was led by Charles Swan, who had 18 points and nine rebounds.
Simpson returns to action on Monday, Jan. 3 in Ashland, Ore., against Southern Oregon University. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
