SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Simpson University men's basketball team took to the court in Sacramento, Calif., on Wednesday, Nov. 2 against the Sacramento State Hornets in an exhibition game to help both teams prepare for their upcoming seasons. The Hornets led from wire to wire but the Red Hawks kept it close before dropping the game 79-65.
Sacramento State led the entire way as the Hornets shot 44.6 percent (25-for-56) from the field and 74.2 percent (23-for-31) from the free throw line while holding a commanding edge in the rebounding department (47-34). They were led by Joe Eberhard, who finished with 20 points, eight rebounds, six assists and two blocked shots.
The Red Hawks had three players score in double figures. They were led by Bryan Castillo's 14 points. Dalton Thacker had 13 points, and Stephon Thomas had 12 points for the Red Hawks in the losing effort. Simpson struggled from the field shooting just 37.9 percent from the field and only converted three of 14 attempts from beyond the three-point line.
Despite the poor shooting, the game was a good point to build on for the Red Hawks as they will begin their actual preseason schedule on Friday, Nov. 4 when they take on the Lions from Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, Calif. Tip off is at 5:30 p.m.
