Simpson loses exhibition game to Sac State
Red Hawks lose preseason opener to Vanguard
COSTA MESA, Calif. - Simpson University men's basketball team opened their preseason play on Friday, Nov. 4 against the Lions from Vanguard University dropping the game 95-81. The Lions were led by Chris Kupets who had 38 points including 26 in the second half to charge the Lions to a season-opening victory over the Red Hawks.
Both teams struggled offensively in the first half. The Red Hawks shot just 32.1 percent from the field and the Lions only slightly better shot 38.5 percent. In addition, each team committed 14 turnovers in the half showing some early season jitters. The Lions led by just one point with 4:25 to play in the half. Kupets then led Vanguard on an 11-3 run to close the half with the Red Hawks trailing 39-30.
Although the Red Hawks pulled the game close again trailing by just one point with just over 11 minutes to go in the game the Vanguard shooting was too much to handle. The Loins shot 62.2 percent from the field and opened a gap that they would not relinquish. They finished the game 14 points ahead of the Red Hawks in the 95-81.
The Red Hawks were led by Bryan Castillo who had 20 points, four assists and three steals. Calvin Smith had 18 points for Red Hawks. Three other Red Hawks scored double figures in the game. Stephon Thomas scored 11 points; Travis Derochowski scored 13 points; and Justin Phillips had 12 points.
The Red Hawks look to rebound from this loss on Saturday, Nov. 5 against the Loins from Hope International University in Fullerton, Calif. Tip off is at 2 p.m.
