Simpson finishes in fourth after day one of play at Mustang Invite

CANYON COUNTRY, Calif. - The Red Hawks men's golf team was in action on Monday, Oct. 31 competing in the Mustang Invitational at Robinson Ranch Golf Club hosted by The Master's College just outside of Santa Clarita. The first day of action involved two rounds of play after which the Red Hawks find themselves in fourth place.
The leaders after the first day is the Cougars from CSU San Marcos who shot a combined 580 which puts them at four over par. On the heels of the Cougars is the The Master's College Mustangs who shot a combined 583 (+7), in third is Point Loma Nazarene with a 584 (+8), the Red Hawks are in forth with a 586 (+10) and Holy Names University rounds out the top five shooting a 593 (+17).
The individual leader after two rounds is Joshua Mathis from Biola University who shot a 70 and 68 on the par 72 course putting his score at six under par and five strokes ahead of the next closest competitor. Red Hawk standout Mitch Card was the first finisher for Simpson shooting a 144 putting him at even par six strokes off of the lead in fifth place. Jake West followed Card for the Red Hawks with a 145 (+1) after that was Marcus Mezzano with a 148 (+3), Nick Maddalena 149 (+4) and Bridger Cotton 153 (+9).
The final round of play will take place of Tuesday, Nov. 1. The Red Hawks will have their work cut out for them if they hope to close down on the six strokes that they have to make up on the leaders.
