Simpson edged out by Warriors at home
Simpson University Sports News
REDDING, Calif. - For the second day in a row the Red Hawks men's soccer team was in action at home. Today, they faced off against the Warriors from Corban University. Simpson lost the hard-fought game 3-2.
The Red Hawks started the game slowly, as has been their problem most of the season, and they paid a price when three minutes into the match the Warriors had already found the back of the net. Freshman striker Derik Cheney lifted the ball over a diving Justin Webb who was in goal for the Red Hawks. Then just two minutes later in the 5th minute the Warriors added to their lead when midfielder Aaron Kinnes made it 2-0 from an assist from forward Josh Hamilton. After that the Red Hawks seemed to wake up and started playing some good soccer; unfortunately, they struggled to finish off the chances that they created. In the 37th minute the Warriors seemingly put the game out of reach with a goal from Hamilton to add to his assist earlier in the match and the teams would take a 3-0 scoreline into the half.
The second half began the way that the Red Hawks wanted by creating chances; however, they failed to finish those chances. Wingers Kerry Meehan and Luis Perez were the main providers of the attack for the Red Hawks. It wasn't until the 75th minute when Meehan's shot was blocked and fell to the feet of senior Jordan Reed whose follow up shot came agonizingly close striking the post. Nathan Butterfield followed up that shot and was able to find the back of the net making the score 3-1 and giving the Red Hawks a lifeline. Simpson continued to force the issue and brought the game back within one when the Warrior goalkeeper Steven Mason came out to clear the ball which only reached Red Hawk midfielder Tyler Goens whose 35 yard shot was placed perfectly over the defense off of the crossbar and into the net with only one minute left on the clock.
The Red Hawks drop to 1-4 on the season. They will have another crack at getting back into the win column on Wednesday, Sept. 14 when they will take on the Owls from Oregon Tech in Klamath Falls, Ore. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
