Simpson Goes 1-1 on day one of Cal Baptist Tourney

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Simpson University's women's softball team started the California Baptist softball tournament off with a 7-1 loss to the Southern Oregon University Raiders on Thursday, Nov. 17. The Lady Red Hawks defeated Davenport College 4-2 in their second game of the day.
In game one, Southern Oregon took the 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth. The Lady Red Hawks tied the game at one in the top of the fifth when sophomore Morgan Davis scored an unearned run. Southern Oregon rallied and scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the 7-1 lead and the eventual victory.
Sophomore Hayley Rodriguez was the losing pitcher for Simpson. She pitched 4.1 innings and gave up seven hits and seven runs. Freshman Whitney McCain finished out the game and didn't give up any hits or runs.
In game two, Davenport had a 2-0 lead for four innings before Simpson tied the game at two in the top of the fifth inning. Sophomore Nicole Hutchins' triple allowed freshman Shaley Madruga and sophomore Davis to score. The Lady Red Hawks took the 4-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning. Freshman Kristen Deal's single to right field allowed junior Nicki Feuerbach to reach home. Freshman Chelsea Dunn stole home to give Simpson the two-run lead and the win.
Freshman McCain was the starting pitcher. She pitched the first two-thirds of the first inning. She gave up two hits and two runs. Davis was brought in, and she pitched the rest of the game (6.1 innings). She gave up seven hits and no runs. She was the winning pitcher.
Simpson continues their play in the Cal Baptist Tournament on Friday, Feb. 18.
