Simpson continues steady play at Cal Baptist Tourney

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Simpson University's women's softball team teamed played two games on day two of the California Baptist Tournament on Friday, Feb. 18. In game one, they faced off against host California Baptist. The Lady Red Hawks were shut out 9-0 in the five inning game. In game two, Simpson played Southern Oregon University for the second time in the tournament. This time, they went home with the 8-4 victory in five innings of play.
Game one was scoreless until the bottom of the third when Cal Baptist had an explosive inning. They scored all nine of their runs in the bottom of the third.
Simpson freshman Whitney McCain was the losing pitcher. She pitched the entire game and gave up nine runs off seven hits. Simpson's offense only recorded two hits in the game. Sophomore Morgan Davis and freshman Alexis Angier each recorded a hit.
In game two, Southern Oregon started the game by scoring in the bottom of the first to take the 1-0 lead. Simpson rallied and scored five runs in the top of the second to take the 5-2 lead. Southern Oregon scored two runs in the bottom of the second to bring the score to 5-3. The Lady Red Hawks added three runs to their score in the top of the fifth to take the 8-3. Southern Oregon scored another run in the bottom of the fifth, but it wasn't enough. Simpson won the game 8-4.
Freshman Shaley Madruga started Simpson's scoring spree in the opt of the second by scoring an unearned run. Junior Valarie Rodriguez and Angier also scored unearned runs in this inning. Freshman Chelsea Dunn and junior Corine Alexander were the two remaining scores in that inning. In the top of the fifth, junior Nicki Feuerbach scored on Dunn's sacrifice fly to left field. Freshman McKenzie Burroughs scored on Rodriguez's single to right field. Angie's single to Sou's shortstop allowed Madruga to score Simpson's final run. Davis was the winning pitcher for Simpson. She pitched 4.2 innings and gave up seven hits and four runs.
Simpson returns to action in the Cal Baptist Tourney on Saturday, Feb. 19.
